Charter customers are required to have ASA Basic Keelboat certification to skipper a boat. If you do not have certification, but possess equivalent skills or U.S. Sailing certification, you will be given a short test prior to casting off and may be required to demonstrate some practical skills and knowledge. The test covers basic sailing knowledge such as Points of Sail, Boat Terminology and Right of Way situations. ASA Basic Keelboat sailors as well as those who've successfully completed the Rental test may take boats 20' - 23' in length. Sailors who have achieved higher certifications may charter larger vessels.

Alternatively and if you possess equivalent skills and experience or commensurate training from another school, you can challenge the ASA basic certification. It's typically required that clubs and schools refer customers to each other before discounts are honored, and it's a common courtesy that most ASA clubs extend to each other's members.
